I really am just curious here. Not wanting to be a debate or anything.
But how many people here, (professing Christian or atheist...or somewhere in between) have actually read the Bible, in its entirety?
Ive met very few people (Christian or atheist) Who have.
Makes me wonder how people can debate something that they have never read?

Ive read *some* of the Hindu Vedas but would never claim to be an authority of Hinduism based solely on a partial reading of their scriptures.

Just curious. Thanks

//So, Nailit, are you telling us you are an expert on the entire Bible?//
Please show where I have claimed to be an expert on the Bible.

//You have read it cover to cover, but I doubt if you ever understood any of it.//
Such arrogance! I don't understand it but you do. Why is that then?
Are you favoured by God and given a special insight into it?
Are you intellectually superior to those that reject it?
Are you Psychic and know my mind and heart?
Why do you think that I don't understand it and you do?
Khandro, //I participated in a non-stop marathon Bible reading .... it continued day and night until it was finished,//

Just out of interest, how long did it take - and did you nod off at any time?

A non-stop marathon Bible reading eh?
Some people just live on the edge...
Probably not too bad, nailit, as long as you don't get stuck with the 'begetting' bits. ;o)
n. It was under way when a friend and I arrived in town in the afternoon it went on throughout the night, I did nod off, but I was in bed in my hotel room overlooking the square, not sure when it finished, late the next day I think.
I've just looked this up, It takes about three days and nights;

" It takes just 70 hours and 40 minutes to read the Bible through "at pulpit rate," and aloud! It takes only 52 hours and 20 minutes to read the Old Testament, and just 18 hours and 20 minutes to read the New Testament. The longest book, Psalms, will take just 4 hours and 28 minutes."
Tough looking guys in Western gear, bums, drunks, children, old ladies, and oddballs such as me, all brought together communally doing something useless and yet movingly significant.

nailit. Don't knock it if you ain't tried it :0)
Who was it who said "You should try everything except incest and Morrid dancing"?
I think it was Somerset Maugham :0)
Khandro, thanks. Interesting.
Nailit, I have never claimed special insight into the meaning of the scriptures.
IT is just that you having claimed to have read it cover to cover, is a badge you seem to wear with pride.
If you understand it all I bow to your knowledge, and wish I also had such insight.
Theland, //I have never claimed special insight into the meaning of the scriptures.//

When you say //[Nailit] quite obviously doesn't have a clue about the meaning of what he has read// you’re clearly claiming that your understanding is greater than his... and you believe that.

//IT is just that you having claimed to have read it cover to cover, is a badge you seem to wear with pride//
Not at all. But I CAN say that I have actually read the thing that I reject and able to give answers for my reason for rejecting it (because Ive read it!).
The other side of the coin is someone defending something which they havnt read and giving reasons why WE should believe it...

//If you understand it all I bow to your knowledge//
Ive never claimed to understand it all.

Cross posted with naomi there....
Big wooden spoon Naomi.
The fact that one has read a book doesn't mean that the book is true. Jewish lads and muslim lads spend much of their youth reading and memorising books, but so what!
Quite. And some atheist ladies like to stir the pot and wait for the fireworks.
Theland, no wooden spoon. Mine was a valid observation.
