Never haard of haar - what is it?

Mist and fog: it used to be a just the degree of visibility. Mist was visibility down to (say) 1km, fog if it were less than that.
'Haar' is sea fog. It's the dense kind that rolls inland on a hot sunny day to spoil your time on the beach. Haar is a scandinavian term widely used in Scotland. 'Smirr' is another of those weather words, and means that dense fine drizzle, "rain you can take a bite out of" as someone said!
