The concept of a "good" ford escort is something of an oximoron, IMO, but, if well looked after this should prove to be reliable. I think the GTI version was only sold in tiny numbers, trying to cash in on the popularity of the name, but it was a long way from being class competitive, and disappeared quite quickly. Most fords will go well beyond 1000k without trouble if they have been looked after, check all the usual suspects for wear at that mileage, and as it is, on papaer at least, a performance model, have a good look at the owner too, is he the sort who will have tried to get the performance out of it? Dont pay too much, as it will be very difficult to sell on again.
Its below average mileage so it probably has been well looked after, especially if it has a full dealer service history. Is the current owner the only owner? If so, and if he doesn't look like a racer (which is actually quite hard to tell, you never know how people actually drive), it sounds like one of the better examples of that age. I wouldn't pay anymore than 3,200 from a dealer.
However, I'd agree with Impret-Sir and add that a good Ford is somewhat a myth. I personally wouldn't trust any Ford beyond about 85k miles, the engines aren't up to it (no matter how they're driven) and the paintwork and corrosion protection certainly aren't.
I should just like to clarify my position that I said a good ESCORT is an oxymoron, not that a good FORD is. there are many very good Ford cars, particularly those made from the Escorts successor onwards, (the Focus), which is the leader in its class. Modern Ford engines should, with proper servicing, easily last beyond 100k miles.as for the bodywork, well, its no better or worse than other, mainstream, mass market cars.
agree with the above observations- and remember the extra insurance the gti badge brings -even when there is no gain in performance
can only remember seeing a couple of gtis ever
for it to be a good deal it needs to be around the 750 at most
they are ok and there isnt many around not many ford dealers no much about them and if you loss the gti badge you cant get it anywhere my mate paid 1000 it is a r reg and only done 57k i got a escort and it has done 112k and i have had a lot of work done to it in the last month i have had it i spent 700 that is a s reg but the deal is up to you
