Why is petrol selt in tenths of a penny? You never see see a bag of tatties for 120.9p a bag do you? When did the practice start?

For "selt" I think you should read "sold".

It started many years ago when they started selling petrol in litres instead of gallons. Please don't suggest they round up the price to whole pence as that would increase bills even more.
For the same reason that many goods are sold for �xxx.99.

If petrol is 97.9p a litre and I put in 17 litres, that works out as �16.643 exactly but I can't pay the 0.3p can I, so what's the point of fractions? Why not just say 98p?
