After my severe reaction last month I’ve been googling for hair dyes that don’t cause allergic reactions, and I’ve seen a couple, but has anyone actually tried any of them?? Obviously whatever I buy I will do a patch test but would be nice to have some actual feedback.

I think the main glitch with your question is that what I or others may have reaction to won't necessarily be the same for you, find the gentlest and as you say do a test first.

It has to be one without this certain chemical that causes 99% of the reactions. Can’t remember the name of it...
Hello Smowball, In the salon where I work, there are several clients who have allergic reactions to hair dye's..our colourist has managed to avoid disaster by using foils to colour the hair.. then the colour stays just on the hair & in the foil 'package'. There are many different makes of colour these days ! She always does a patch test though...INSIST on this if you go to a salon!! as the dye will touch your scalp when its rinsed through..after its taken, but diluting it with the water may stop the problem.. I'm sorry I don't know many non salon colours ..Henna is a good one .. but has limited shades.. whatever you choose.. PATCH TEST.. hope this has been of some help! have a good weekend.. Mrs C x

non permanent dye, Clairol Nice & Easy might help, or an antihistamine tablet before application.

Permanent dyes are mixed with hydrogen peroxide, which is also a cure to reaction.
tambo, I don't think an antihistamine will help with dermatitis.
your hairdresser will advise
I am very allergic to permanent dyes- not sure what ingredient but my patch test was instantly horrible! I use Casting dyes at home with no problem, and at the hairdresser I use various semi-permanent dyes; but they have done a patch test for everything in advance. You can buy a dye and in the instructions it will tell you how to do a test- just dab a bit of the colour (usually a tube) behind your ear. If you don't react, you should be fine. If you apply dye and it starts to tingle or itch etc, wash it straight out.

Clairol nice n easy was the one which mad my head swell to twice it’s size and seal my eyes shut! And yes I always take antihistamines beforehand anyway. I really can’t use any off the shelf dyes anymore.
My neighbour only put on false eyelashes and her face swelled up like yours, Smow. Go to a salon. The stuff they use isn't the same as what you get in a supermarket or Boots.

Should I be worried that I've never had a patch test before my salon dye touchup?

I’ve been to a salon before. They refuse to work with me now lol. I found a dye on Google that’s use on cancer recover victimew who’s hair is growing back, and that’s meant to be non allergenic
