oz, you're right, a rose in a potato patch is a weed!

A lovely plant to have, such a super colour, tried and failed with them as my soil didn't suit. Like a tiny patch of twilight sky on the ground.

I'm tending to agree with Rowanwitch, on Gentian.
My best guess is Meadow bottle gentian (Gentiana clausa)

We dug it out of the front garden - where it wast it was being hidden by a shrub.

Something about it made me think it might be a plant, hence I planted it in an old container.

It will now find a home back in the front garden......
