// A group of Tommy Robinson supporters has blocked off a major road in central London in a tense stand-off with police, who made several arrests.

Supporters chanted “Free Tommy Robinson” and hurled missiles and smoke bombs at police.

Hundreds of demonstrators descended on the capital and blocked off the road around Trafalgar Square.

A spokesperson for megasightseeing.com said: “Our London sightseeing bus was on its normal route when it got caught up in the demonstrations. The bus was stormed by demonstrators. “The demonstrators have caused a significant amount of damage to the bus, which meant it had to be towed away.

The Met said that as of 6.30pm, one person had been arrested for possession of an offensive weapon, two for assault on a police officer, a fourth for possession of a flare and a fifth for criminal damage to a bus. The Met will now look at CCTV footage of the demonstration. //

What is a football hooligan supposed to do on a Saturday afternoon, when the season has ended?

237SJ, you've got the wrong end of the stick. The report claims that 'hundreds' climbed onto a bus. Big bus, that.
I haven't read all posted here as I'd commented on 237's thread last night, so apologies if this is a repeat.

Sorry, only had a quick glance at AB. No, I saw about half a dozen people on the bus (some standing on the roof with megaphones)
Hundreds would be a Guinness Record attempt and has been done, but let's not get hung up on a word.

Understandable some want their hero released despite him admitting his wrongdoing, but they shouldn't disrupt part of the Capital to noisily bleat their disapproval.
TBH - I was more interested in admiring the police horses - they were gorgeous, poor things.
Mamyalynne, I've no idea why you posted that link. We know some of them climbed on the bus - just not the claimed 'hundreds'. And that isn't really getting hung up on a word. It demonstrates that the report is flawed.

All demonstrations disrupt. Would you ban them all?
Pre-arranged quiet protests should be allowed - unarranged loud and noisy protests as evidenced that cause fear and injury shouldn't.

Thanks for posting the video Mamyalynne,

I am even more convinced that the protestors are Robinson’s Luton Town FC hooligan element, the MIGs.
Robinson was convicted in 2011 of using "threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour" during a fight between supporters of Luton Town and Newport County in Luton the previous year. Robinson reportedly led the group of Luton fans, and played an integral part in starting a 100-man brawl.
I don't believe that any protest, pre-arranged or not, can be guaranteed to be problem free - do you?
^That to Mamyalynne.
Only if fervent wishes are fulfilled. Naomi.

Hundreds may have crowded on the bus, just not at the same time. The riot went on for several hours so when some left the bus, others could have got on.

Haha! Good try, Gromit. Move along the bus please!
Room for two on top. Ding, ding!
// I don't believe that any protest, pre-arranged or not, can be guaranteed to be problem free - do you?//

yes
oh god one of the usual suspects as an apologist for violence - so long as it is 'good' violence it is OK

yes there is a right to demonstrate - peacefully
the peaceful bit is part of the job spec

and I have a new idea that no one here has thought of:
for a demo there should be keepers or jockeys keeping order not wiv guns or ennyfing but by authority wivvin the group alone - i know ! lets call them 'stewards' ! foo !
good idea dat one ! - nest week I will re-invent the wheel!
