but I've often found Mr Alan Johnson often quite reasonable in his views and I certainly agree with this one on ID cards.

that. ///

At your place of employment aren't you required to carry one around your neck at all times?

"NJ, the trouble with passports is that they are only valid for ten years."

Jackdaw, the trouble with biometric photo ID cards is that they are also only valid for ten years, albeit half the price of renewal of a full passport.
I'm all for it.

Passports are a pain to carry, but ID cards fit nicely in the wallet.
Unless a name badge also has the owner's photo on it, how do you know the badge relates to the wearer anyway?
does seem a good idea, one with a photo on it would do.
I don't have a driving licence or a passport, so having an ID card would be useful for me.
and me..
"I don't know why so many are against the reintroduction of ID cards, no one seems bothered regarding Birth Certificates, Marriage Certificates, Driving Licences and Employment ID Passes."

Simple. As a citizen I should not have to carry or even provide papers to prove myself valid to the State. The State should be proving itself worthy to me. If the State has valid doubts about me let it prove them.

Certificates to indicate one is born, married, capable of driving, or employed are clearly not so totally obnoxious. It doesn't relate to me having to prove myself as an individual citizen or else being considered persona non grata. We all deserve more respect than that.

The State exists to benefit the individual citizen, the individual citizen is not there to be pushed around by the State. The priority is the wrong order when papers are demanded.
