why do airlines loose customers? and what are the best research methods into looking into this? also where can i find an overview or does anyone know some of the challenges facing the airline industry and different company strategies in dealing with these challenges?

Try typing 'customer retention' and then 'customer loyalty' into Google and say what happens. Might want to try adding '+airline' to each search to try and pull out airline-specific information. Customer Loyalty Card schemes has got to be worth a mention.
Not being funny but it strikes me schools and colleges ought to be showing you how to use the web to extract information for your assignments.
As for challenges, well the glaringly obvious ones (oil running out and global warming) are in the daily news.
