Is Running a good way of keepin fit ?

HI, I am thinking of joining an athletics club having been involved when i was younger. I wish to get fit and tone up ! what would be a safe distance to start off running to start myself off ?

are you thick running is the best way to get fit but you should not try and run set distances at first do it by how long you run for and then see how far you ran then as you get fitter you will be able to run that distance in a much shorter time and be able to run farther.
I swear by swimming - I lost loads of weight and toned up very quickly :o)

I use the cross trainer at the gym. I burn of almost twice the amount of cals doing 15 mins on that than running the same time on the treadmill. (and it is better for your joints)
Running is one of the most effective ways of burning off fat, if that's what you want to do.
