How can I sent a stamped addressed envelope for someone to use in America to send back to me. i.e. can I put UK stamps on it in order to get it back?

No, you need USA stamps.

If you go to your local PO and ask them for International Reply Coupons they will sell you postal coupons which you pay for in stirling (think they are about 50p each) and can be sent anywhere in the world to be used as postage payment by the recipient when they take the letter and coupons to their post office. :o) Trudi
