Yes, but by saying ‘should’ , she’s distancing herself from what PC dictates she ought to feel.
I disagree. It sounds apologetic to me.
The written word can’t ‘sound’ like anything. The sound comes from your own internal interpretation, which I’d obviously different to mine.

Her words can be interpreted in many ways. Have you never done the basic drama class technique of being given a statement to say in different tones of voice which completely changes the meaning?
