I have a SATA2 hard drive (it was advertised as such, it doesn't have sata2 written on it) and I tried it in 3 different PC's that support sata1 for sure...the sata2 hard disk didn't even pick up on these machines.

Is it a bad disk? Are sata2 hard disks compatible with sata1 mainboards?

That's what I thought...so my SATA1 compatible mainboard should be able to pick up the SATA2 drive as long as it is working properly?
Yes it should. Make sure SATA support is enabled in the BIOS before you march off back to the shop!
