34a Grating hog's -back soldiers couldn't finally digest. Number of letters not known ... but AMEN is in there somewhere.... There is also an extra "G" in the clue ...most likely in Grating

18d Discarded gospels (English version) in English cathedral . There is an extra "S" in the clue....ELY is in the answer somewhere.

These are both thematic - and giving details of the 'amendments' would give the whole thing away! Both answers to the clues are longer than the entries.

I did realise they were both "themed" hence "number of letters not known" in my request
Still not seeing what can come out of a longer 34a but will have another look....

Letters 2 to 7 removed. G from Grating is extra.
