It is being addressed. Two ladies were interviewed on TV this morning. They are trying to educate the girls in schools and teach them and teachers what to do if they suspect it's going to happen to them.
I will believe it is being addressed (properly) when I see some prosecutions.
SP, you said //People need to understand what’s actually happening on the ground,//

I’ve told you what’s actually happening on the ground. I’ve also told you that educating people who think they are educated is not a simple matter - as is evidenced by some of the responses on this thread.
Talbot @ 10.43 Good idea, worth a try. I remember the AIDS ads but I don't know if they were considered successful. Might email my MP this afternoon and put your suggestion to him.

A suggestion from a Guardian reader, no less.

/// Apart from introducing regular school nurse inspections (or similar) there is little we can do to check up on them.  I believe we should seriously consider introducing something like that, and try to put aside British squeemishness for the sake of these girls safety. ///

The big problem is secrecy. How many young girls have their genitals examined?

How many others know that something that was done to them was wrong?

How many people in the wider community had even heard of FGM before say, five years ago?

If you spool back to 1985, when FGM was outlawed, had you heard of it? Or anyone else you know? You can't say, "Why has there been no prosecutions in 30 years when for much of that time, the process flew under the radar.
A couple of weeks ago I accompanied my wife to hospital and found myself reading a poster in the waiting room. It was about FGM, and said that staff should report all cases of it. So the practice is no secret, is it?

Old BBC article on the topic;

//If you spool back to 1985, when FGM was outlawed, had you heard of it? Or anyone else you know?//

I assume you mean "heard of it" here in the UK, SP. A very good question. The answer is "No", of course.

Personally I don't know why anyone would want to import this barbarity and be happy to keep on importing it; it's a bit of "diversity" we could do without I would have thought.

The practice of FGM is in secret.

You know about child abuse, right?

Well, you must be aware that child abusers don't exactly run around discussing who they are about to attack next.

Secret.

It's done in secret, under the radar.

//Personally I don't know why anyone would want to import this barbarity and be happy to keep on importing it; it's a bit of "diversity" we could do without I would have thought.//

Yes. Agreed.

I just hope that people are concerned about the children, rather than using FGM as a subtext for something else.

Got me ... I feign any anger at FGM to just to have a go a Muslims.

That's one of the problems with Lefty, Talbot: they impute bad motives to people who disagree with them

This shows a lack of imagination, and, what's worse, fair-mindedness.
sp, //I just hope that people are concerned about the children, rather than using FGM as a subtext for something else. //

Oh my....
Oh my, indeed. No shame.
