I think that you’re right in that the difficulty in tackling FGM is that it is by nature, hidden. However, it’s probably an over-simplification to suggest that ‘backward’ people whom have undergone this process cannot be educated.
That would suggest that they do not have any self-determination or ability to change from the attitudes of their parents.
This is not what I’ve observed. There was a girl I grew up with who this was done to. I only found out when I realised she had started a campaign group to highlight the issue.
I’m not sure what exposure you have had to girls who have suffered this procedure - did they tell you that they would inflict in on their daughters too?

Simple question...how do you prove a girl has undergone FGM.
That’s the crux of the issue, and why some of the ideas put forward would be difficult to implement - such as examining girls who travel to certain areas in Africa before they go, and when they come back.
This would have to be an invasive vaginal examination.

We have now moved on to 'biological definitions', it seems.
Perhaps the phrase 'genital examination' should have been used thereby distinguishing between a visual look at the appropriate area and an 'vaginal/internal' which would have been a bit after-the-fact and pointless.
Although, anyone with half a brain would have known was intended even if the words were medically correct....

I’m sure you can guess, sp, that I have no experience of women or girls who have suffered this procedure, and just because you know of one person, that doesn’t make you any more of an authority on the subject than I am!
There have been threads where you and I have disagreed on ‘educating’ the backwards’ before.
And whilst I don’t want to divert AOG’s thread, I can only hold up that discussion as an example, which was about the starving Africans.
For all the education we have tried on them, (starving Africans) and for all the years I have been around (I believe you and I are a similar age) absolutely nothing has worked.
Probably because they don’t want it to work. They would rather keep up tradition, than go against the grain.
I also think that “backwards” is a very appropriate description.
The educated world moves forward, (not always in a good way, of course) but those whose lives are mired in ancient religions/traditions stand still, and if they are still keeping up certain traditions that have no place in todays society, after many centuries have passed, then that makes them backwards.

We often see ad-breaks telling us about the perils of cigarettes. Why not run one on FGM directly on the watershed ... when kids are supposed to be in bed but as we know they are not in bed.
Put some pressure on the criminals abusing their kids.
Kids welfare before any religious or cultural bullcrap imo.

I think you don’t quite understand what’s going on.
In Africa, there are states which have moved to make the practice illegal with prosecutions and jail terms given to those who practice FGM.
People need to understand what’s actually happening on the ground, and that the issue is not only being addressed here, but in these ‘backward’ countries.
naomi24 - it’s great that these women could openly discuss this with you. I hope you were in a position to offer them guidance point them to resources which might help them go in a different direction.
