Alternator problem?

A couple of times in the past few weeks I've tried to start my car and its completely dead. Happened again today and I'm not sure what it is. When i turn the key theres a loud clicking but the engine doesn't turn over.

A few people have suggested an alternator problem. Anyone got an idea what else it could be?

If it is the alternator how much should i expect to pay to get it fixed?

the clicking noise is most likely the starter solenoid - likely due to a flat battery - if the battery is old (over 5 yrs) it is probaly past its useful life - a discharge test on it by a local auto-electrician would confirm this. �20 - �60 should get you a new one.
forgot to add - an old battery generally deteriorates by not holding its charge - thats why people blame the alternator

halfords will only sell you a battery. a lot of their staff aren't fully conversant with using test equiptment.my daughter got a batery only to find it was the alternator. oopps!
get your local car spares shop to test both, that way you'll get the right one first go.

When the starter solenoid sticks you can some times get it away by giving it a few taps with a screw driver handle. (Get someone to turn the key and you will trace it by the 'clicks' .... & we are not talking 'taps' not GBH)
You can do a basic alternator and battery test yourself if you have a basic electronic test meter, with the meter on DC a healthy battery should measure at least 12.5-13.5volts. a knackered battery may show 12 or less.
When you start the engine if the alternator is working correctly the battery voltage should increase to at least 13.8v, If the alternator is not charging then the voltage will probably drop rather than increase.
