sultanas...bigger, plumper not as dry...
Sultanas are seedless.Personally I don't have a preference.

I find raisins a bit gritty.

Are they just dried a bit more than sultanas, or are they a different variety of grape?
Isn't one a subset of the other, or something like that ? I recall looking it up once, and I don't think the definitions were that clear.
No particular preference, they are much of a muchness.
I thought raisins were from dried black or red grapes and sultanas from dried green ones? Sultanas are the ones that plump up nicely when soaked in rum or whisky :-)
Hoppy....generally, they are a different grape variety, from what we call here in Britain as raisins.

Another often confused variety are what we call "currants" I always thought, until a couple of years ago that they were dried blackcurrants. But they are just another variety of dried grape ::

Raisins are for the more staid in society where sultanas are known to be preferred by those of a more outgoing, hedonistic bent as celebrated in the ditty Sultanas Of Schwing.
Question Author
Oh no! I forgot about currants.

This is getting too confusing.
au contraire, raisins are for entrepreneurs and adventurers, as in Raisin the Titanic.
Your are telling me Hoppy.

A few years, I baked a fruit cake with currants in and no raisins, as I knew my friends wife didn't like raisins.

But she still wouldn't eat it, as she quite correctly called the currants raisins and not dried blackcurrants, as I had thought !

Mind you, she was and remains a fussy cow !
mikey, Zante currants are dried grapes but regular red and black currants are berries.
JNO....yes, I know that now !
and just in time for Christmas!
i love raisins, sultanas not so much, they remind me of plucked flies...
I have just baked a Seed Cake ( with Caraway Seeds).

Its even more like a cake with dead flies in it !

Put the kettle on Mikey, I'm coming round for a slice
