It's the cryptic. Must have something wrong if it's call. I did think of that, but it didn't fit other answers.

Tried toll and every combination that can think of. Must be a mistake elsewhere in the puzzle though I have been checking my answers.

Eureka! It was darken I'd got darker. Thought the "r" at the end was for king. Already had "k" for the knight. Darken makes more sense. Thanks everyone.
