What is the origin of 'starter for ten'? I first heard Eddie Izzard say it on one of his shows, and heard it again recently, and now seem to hear it all the time.

It comes from the programme University Challenge where the scoring system runs that the first question answered on the buzzer scores ten which is followed up by three questions just for the team who answered correctly worth five points each.....

Therefore your starter for ten is "Name the worlds funniest transvestite?"

Eddie Izzard.
*BZZZ* "Merritt, Sheffield" Eddie Izzard.
Im afraid the answer is J Edgar Hoover
I've always wondered why it was done with tens and fives instead of twos and ones. Maybe they thought that it would make them look cleverer getting more points.

Hey Woofgang you can even be like me and be lazy and unobservant and still know Indiesinger's full name if you join in with some of the regular users of the site at our yahoo group http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/Answerbook/ were we go for more chat based communication to stop cluttering up the site here :>)
