Some of these people are paid by agencies to collect money. I give to the local branch of Cats Protection - when I also gave to their HQ I used to get begging calls all the time.

Ringing my doorbell unannounced and asking for money
cold calling on homes was outlawed I understand in Scotland anyway
There is a contact number in my link for any further question re the door to door collections that aren't answered on the page.
For my own part it would be a 'no thank you' and done with.

get a go away canvassers hawkers etc sign..I have one..it works
I have a 'Beware of the dog" sign. That also works.
I'm lucky I have door security on the outside, rarely someone else will let callers in but never enough to be a problem.
