I don't know what their proper name is but when I was younger I always used to call them "pavement spiders" because you could see hundreds of them running around on pavements, especially in warm weather. I'll keep watch this site in the hope that somebody can identify them properly.

Thanks, I live in New York state in the Adirondack mountains. I really would like to know what their name is as I am quite fond of the world of arachnids.
I know you said they were spiders and not mites.but it sounds like red spider mites.

These (if they are really tiny, and leave a bit of red dye when smashed) could be common red spider mites.

There are two types of common red spider mite; glasshouse red spider mite Tetranychus urticae and Fruit tree red spider mite Panonychus ulmi. Damage caused by these mites can be significant when they occur in high numbers. As plant sap feeders, the first sign of damage is a speckling on leaves eventually turning them yellow. Young plants growth is distorted and older plants loose their leaves. Fine webbing is formed, which is then used to transport very high numbers of red spider mites about.

They do not look at all like spider mites. They look like red spiders. They are round not elongated. They have no residual dye. I hope to capture one and endeavor to get a photo of it.
Hi arachnea,
You seem to know a lot about arachnids and their relatives and you know what they'r not, but I think it may help to narrow down the search if you could give some idea of the spiders size.
Thanks and Good Luck. T bird+
