After How Many Miles Should A Headgasket Be Changed On A Golf

Question as headline, my girlfriend is thinking of buying one that's done 135k miles, we're not sure if the head gasket requires changing after a certain amount of miles?

I don't think they need changing as a matter of course. They are only changed if there is some reason to remove the cylinder head.

Unless blown you do not need to change.

No. The head gasket should not be changed unless the head is taken off for any reason. Then a new gasket should be put on when it's re-assembled. The old story, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Headgaskets are not like timing belts they keep going till they break!
For example I had a Rover200 only done 65000 miles and had to get the HG done as it blew, had a vitara with 156000 on the clock and never had the HG done.

That's how my Rover 200 died.

However I would be surprised if you can find anyone who has had a Golf with a blown headgasket.

I believe the Rover HG issue was due to a major design flaw that has not been identified in any other make of car.
