Is it possible to make up a bread dough well in advance of baking (e.g. prepare dough in the evening for baking the following afternoon)?

Yes, you just prepare it up to first or second rise and put int on an oiled tray or in a oiled bowl, covered in the fridge. The yeast wiil probably continue to work very slowly in the fridge or it may become inert, either way, warmit up and off it will go again
