What is the resolution needed in a digital camera to match the quality of a top quality SLR camera

Probably starting at 6 or 8 megapixels but better with 12 megapixels upwards.
It's not quite the same thing though. Think about how big you may want to print the images. a 3MP camera will look good and not pixelated up to almost A4 size. A 4MP would be better, and a 5MP and above may stretch to A3.
