I want to take up photography. Do shops like Dixons/Comet etc still sell good quality cameras that require film (i.e. non-digital)? I would prefer not to have a digital camera because I love the look and process involved when you use a film camera. If it's necessary for a digital camera though can ayone recommend any that produce pictures which closely resemble photos taken using film-based cameras?

Probably best going to a independent camera store and picking up a decent second-hand film SLR.
I would suggest that you decide which make and type of film camera would suit you the best and advertise in the local paper.
There must be hundreds of people stuck with and old film camera that they can't get rid of because the well-known camera shops are just not interested.
I personally have a Pentax ME Super 35mm SLR with wide, normal, 200mm straight and 300mm Telephoto lenses, motor drive, flash, filters, etc which the shops won't even look at these days.
Can you still buy film for those old cameras ?
Just remembered that my Avatar Butterfly was taken with the above Pentax.
Do intend to develop your own pictures? If so I would suggest a medium format camera (they are the most fun). If you wanted to do that on the cheap you can usually pick up a fully-working Brownie for about £5-8 now. Terribly good fun - and you don't get much more manual!

Spare.
As JJ has already mentioned, the biggest problem you would have is buying film.

The question one must ask is, why?
googled From Amazon.co.uk
Agfa 35mm. 36 exposure, ISO 200 colour film = £6.30
Fuji colour film 35mm. 36 exp. £4.56.
You can also still buy colour film from www.mx2.com Fuji ASA 200 X 36 exposure is £2.99
