Buffalo, perhaps? I'm really stretching things on this one, John, but how about this?...There is a type of hen called a Buff Orpington, so - taking the first half of the double name - you get 'buff'. One of the bitterest plants is called 'aloe', so - dropping the 'e', but keeping the sound unaltered - gives you 'alo'. Put 'em together and voli�! Buffalo!

By the way, did you all see the related question in the 'Animals & Nature' category under the heading 'Animal, bird or body-part'? I blithely provided the answer 'Jay' but - after Cetti's response asking for a specific source - I'm not at all so sure. It was one of those things that one feels one "just knows"...but I couldn't totally back it up, despite reasonably convincing evidence. Have another look, please, and something better might emerge. I'd hate it if John didn't win the quiz-prize, because of one error! (By the way, mate, you owe me at least a couple of pints if you do win something!)

half a hen is chic, a bitter plant is chicory so half of that is also chic so I'm guessing the word is CHEEK
