Yesterday, I had cause to ring the vicar of a parish church. He introduced himself a Fred Bloggs.

I couldn't call him Fred, as I have never met him so I called him Mr Bloggs.

I need to ring him again today. Mr Bloggs doesn't seem correct. Do I have to say, 'Hello Reverend, Bloggs'?

How about "Oh hello Rectum, ooops sorry, Rector"
Question Author
Tut.

He's not a rector. He's a Reverend personage.
Hope you get/got everything sorted Tilly.
The word Rector derives from the days when priests could be appointed to more than one parish, entitled to the right to the tithes of all of them. (Hence the term Rector). As he could not personally administer to all his parishes he would appoint vicars (substitutes) on a stipend to perform his duties elsewhere.
