9 Yes, the whole clue seems to be a definition of casebook without a cryptic answer but I would appreciate some of the better, than me, posters to give an opinion.
It's an unusual clue - a sort of extended cryptic definition - but I think the reference is to a particular doctor (Watson) and a particular consulting detective. And the clue as a whole refers to a specific collection of short stories.
We oldies thought of Dr Finlay's Casebook from 60s TV but again, no word link emerged.
