Playing DVDs on laptop

I recently bought a laptop with a dvd and cd rw. I tried to play a dvd on it last night via Windows Media Player but couldnt get it to work. Does anyone know of any software I can download off the net (preferably for free) to make dvds run on my laptop?

Always found VLC player useful for any format so far:

I second jenky's suggestion. Perhaps the best video player available. Plays almost anything you can throw at it.
