....in our house we have two floor lamps, two table lamps, two bedside lamps and a desk lamp. Between them these lamps are fitted with large and small bayonet and large and small screw caps. With a choice of incandescent, halogen, fluorescent and LED bulbs, is it only me or do others find this more than just a tad confusing.

^all that is why I voted for Brexit :-)
Ta Mikey, noted.
"...NJ...why is it ridiculous ?"

Example, Mikey: I have two table lamps which are virtually identical in shape, size and output. They both take the same bulbs, except - one has a large bayonet fitting and one a small. So I'm forced to stock two different bulbs to cover failure in either one. That's ridiculous.
NJ...so why did you buy the 2nd table lamp, when it didn't have the same fitting as the original one ?

Anyway, if both were LED's you probably wouldn't have to change the bulb for many years.
I have a couple of lamps that need new bulbs but I keep putting off going to buy some :( they are all different , I dont understand them all. Why does everything seem to have so much choice nowadays.
bodeker....see my post at 17:08...we are where we are !
I'm going back to candles ;-)
Mamy...this winter, we might all be relying on candles !
My problem is not being able to reach the fittings to change dead bulbs
Am incredibly lucky to have a local hardware store whose employees are always ready to help with myriad choice
Daisy...yet another good reason to change to LEDs !

If you have an inaccessible light, on a high landing, or over some stairs, then LEDs come into their own. As they need changing very rarely ( if ever ! ) then an LED is ideal. and think of all that lovely money you will be saving !
Still couldn't reach to fit them in the first place
Daisey....doesn't that local hardware store have some strapping lad that you could entice to change the bulb for you ?

Oooh, Young Man, as Harry and Kathy Burke would say !

No
daisey....if I lived closer, I would come over and help, and that is a promise !
Thanks
"NJ...so why did you buy the 2nd table lamp, when it didn't have the same fitting as the original one ?"

I didn't - it was a present. There is no reason on earth why there should be small and large bayonet fittings - other than to get you to buy twice as many bulbs as you need.
I'm with you on this one NJ, we should rise up as one and revolt on this issue.

Money making doo dahs the lot of em.
