What time of year is best to go to Canada? I'm visiting Toronto to see some friends. Don't want to go when it's too cold or too expensive on the flights!

there is a budget airline that flied between the UK and Canada, I think it is called Zoom Air, or Airways. That might be worth checking out...
Hiya
My friend lives there and always loves the summer,it lasts quite well into September and the temperatures suddenly plummet to minus whatever! It was minus 20 a couple of weeks ago! Mind you so much of the city is underground I don't think the Canadians mind! Zoom prices are really good too. I would say avoid kids summer hols, about 20th July to 5 Sept when the airlines rip everybody off.
I went there on business a couple of years ago for 2 weeks in January and it was COLD, colder than I have ever been in England.

It was minus 15 for a time and if you did not wear a hat then your head and ears just froze.

There is a whole network of underground walkways in the centre of Toronto, and you can walk between city blocks, between subway stations, and into office blocks and shops without going ouitside.

It is a massive underground world, but high quality. It is not like graffiti covered tunnels in England but marble floors and well lit with bars and cafes and shops as you walk around.

Mind you, if you then have to go outside, POW, it hits you.

Lake Ontario was frozen over when I was there.

And nobody washes their cars because the water would freeze and you would not be able to open and close the car doors so they all drive round with dirty cars.

So avoid going when then weather is that bad.
The underground world is called the PATH, more here

Here is a map of Toronto's underground world. The dark black lines show the underground walkways

Here is a picture of one of the indoor shopping areas in the centre, although this has a roof to the outside.

I would shop around for flights as Zoom seem to have gone up of late. We were looking for a flight to Vancouver later this year and Air Canada came out cheaper.
You could also try Canadian Affair for flights.
Any time of year is amazing!

You can always find something to do, here's a pretty good list:
