Im sitting here, eating flapjack for my lunch, and I always thought it was quite healthy but Im looking at all the ingredients on the packet and now Im not so sure. Is shop-brought flapjack healthy or should I perhaps make some home -made. Can anyone suggest a recipe - thanks xx

Easy flapjack recipe-


175g oats


150g sugar


125g white or brown flour


90g dessicated coconut


150g butter


30ml golden syrup


5ml bicarbonate of soda


Mix oats, flour, sugar & coconut in a big bowl. Melt butter and add syrup and bicarb. When it foams, stir into dry mix and stir well. Pour into tray and cook at 175C for 15 mins. Cut into squares and turn out when cool.


Add chopped dates, cherries, grated apple, apricots etc nuts - whatever you like to vary.

Glad to help MM - careful though they are addictive.....
Delicious but not "healthy". Full of sugar and fat.
To make flapjack recipe a bit healthier you could substitute Flora or other sunflower spread for the butter. (Won't clog up the arteries so much). Most shop bought biscuits and cakes tend to use hydrogenated fat which can increase cholesterol levels.

Emerton, how is it you think things like Flora made out of sunflower oil (liquid at room temp) are made into spreads (solid[ish] at room temp)?


Hydrogenated fats perhaps?


Not convinced it's a better option than butter myself.
