when I got up this morning all 3 of our goldfish were either lying at the bottom of the tank ( still breathing) or trying to swim but kept rolling onto side or back.they all seemed fine last night but now 2 are dead and ones not got long left. The terrible thing is this is the second set of 3 goldfish we've had since easter!

I'm starting to feel like a mass murderer(of fish). I'm obviously doing something wrong but I don't know what. We use water treatment when we change the water and feed according to pack instructions. I don't let my girls tap the tank or stick their fingers in the water.

I would just give up but the fish were a present to my 4 year old daughters and they love having them. So any advice to prevent this happening again would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

p.s. we live in the west of scotland if that helps any regarding water quality. Also the tank gets direct sunlight for a fair part of the day.

living in Scotland you should not require to treat the water when you change it and even then only if required. Only do a partial change with the water having been lying in the same area for about 24 hours, depending on the size of your tank - but about a quarter change should do it. Furthermore, youmay think that you are not overfeeding but who knows what little fingers get up to ? You will find the less you do to them the better they will get on, whatever you do , do not change all the water at one time . Hope all improves. Hard@it

Sorry, meant to say, if they are in constant sunshade them as they like a bit cooler.

Apologies to anyone who's posted lately. I thought this question would have been long forgotten od so haven't checked it for a few days. Thanks to everyone that gave advice. We're having a break from fish for a few weeks.

Hammerman, I don't think anyone was being flippant. People tried their best to help me. If I came across as flippant then that's just cause I was blowing off some steam. I certainly don;t enjoy the death of any animal, especially if I feel responsible, and I hated seeing my two small children crying again.
