i have tiles on my bathroom floor, but want to cover them with vinyl flooring. do i need to put some kind of underlay on top of the tiles first, or can i put them straight on top of the tiles? does it depend on the thickness of the vinyl?

No - the squares of the tiles will show through the vinyl flooring very quickly. The advice is:

Cover ceramic tiles with a 3mm layer of self-levelling compound to smooth over the joints between the tiles.
