Had ‘Remain’ succeeded he’d have stayed in the race, but since it didn’t, he didn’t want the job. His bogus support for the ‘Leave’ campaign back-fired on him. He stood in the leadership race because he was expected to stand, but he had no intention of leading the country out of Europe so ducked out at the first opportunity..

I suspect there was behind the scenes shenanigans which made it impossible for him to stand.

Some shadowy figures applying some unbearable pressure.

We may never know, though I expect we will find out one day.
