Is that nonsense still going on ? I guess it's only Londoners who pass by it regularly, that are still aware. I think the better question was why they started the nonsense in the first place.
Togo, the man who towers over the square gave his life opposing the threat of foreign occupation. Two other statues, those of Havelock and Napier, represent men who spent their lives imposing it.
It's hardly burnt into my psyche to remember that.
Not the Napier who fought Napoleon in the Peninsular war freeing the Portuguese and subsequently the Spanish from old bonny the ultimate would be conqueror? Or Havelock, the Baptist, who excelled in military studies and tactics, distinguishing himself , although usually greatly outnumbered, in Afghanistan, Persia,( as known then) and during the Indian uprising? Its all about perspective you see sandy. For instance, I don't care at all what statue is on display in Dublin.
