inappropriate behaviour, granted. but should children be criminalised just because technology permits a whole new dimension to an age-old children's "game"?

I think that the 'age-old children's "game" as you call it is no longer what it was.

Society, and that includes children, is far more sophisticated and advanced that it was a couple of generations ago, and that means that new rules governing acceptable behaviour have to be created to keep pace with the rapid changes in the way society operates, and how it sees acceptable behaviour.

So the notion that children 'showing each other' their respective differences one-on-one is clearly not comparable with the facility to share graphic images with the entire on-line world at the click of a button.

Markers need to be laid down, and the publicity of this case may well assist in bringing out one of the more sinister aspects of internet culture and children, and ensure that proper education on these issues is provided.

yes Andy, I get all that. but should the "markers" you speak of include criminalisation of the children concerned?
As andy says an up dated version of the age old 'show me yours and I'll show you mine' I remember it happening back in the 1950's .
I'm sorry but this is heavy handed Policing. Arresting someone (and no doubt photo's and DNA and a bail record) is OTT.

Society needs to get a grip first and not go ciminalizing children because of it's (Societies) failure to deal with the issue.
I have had a re-think, and I am inclined to agree that arresting the children concerned is probably not the best way to deal with this issue - some individual conversations and some school-wide education about the concepts of privacy and respect may be a better way to go.
I agree with Andy. They shouldn't have been arrested. Someone should have sat down with them and explained why they shouldn't show pics like that online. More education needed.
Making someone's life a misery should be an arrestable offence, whichever way it is achieved.
