Any suggestions to cure a sticking/freezing cursor? Changes to a vertical line too.

At a guess, you've accidentally enabled 'caret browsing'.

Press F7 to exit.

Maybe 'fluff' in the mouse? Unscrew and blow gently to shift any round the ball inside the mouse.
