i posted my cheque off on the 14th december, but the money has not yet come out of my account, i appreciate that this was over xmas, but how long does it usually take to be returned?

The answer to this is how long is a piece of string? There are a number of factors involved, when did they receive your cheque & when did they bank it. It usually takes 3 to 4 days from them banking the cheque for it to be paid from your account. Also I believe you can no longer post a cheque off , it has to be done at a post office who will issue your car tax disk immediately. Also in future if you are late paying up they may fine you.

I don't know where you heard that you can't pay by cheque any more but that is wrong. Also, as long as the tax is applied for, which mine was, they cannot fine you. My tax ran out at the end of January, I always make sure I am not late in paying up
