Big, wierd flying rat beetle i saw in Brazil !

There were hundreds of them one night in Northern brazil when I went a few years ago, all were about 2 1/2 inches long and almost fleshy to look at. They looked like they had human elbows that they walked along on, like someone half out of a sleeping bag pulling themselves along the ground. I think they flew.

Disgusting! Anyone know what these things are called?

Sounds like some kind of bat! Other than that I dread to think what they could have been...yucko!
