To be fair to Nate Silver, the UK election had far too many variables to be so easily modelled as the US presidential election that tends to be a two-horse race in each state. Pretty much everybody got it wrong -- I suspect in part because the predictions themselves became part of the story.

Whatever happened to the old tradition in rhyming slang, whereby the element that rhymed with the original idea was dropped and only the non-rhyming element was spoken?
Thus, 'stairs' were just 'apples' and the 'pears' part was dopped. In the same way, surely "on the hit" is all that's required when speaking of getting drunk.
