Illegal Sell Of Fuel After Refusal Of Scratch Card?
34 Answers
I am 23, I went to a local garage to refuel my car. While at the counter I asker for a scratch card, to which he asked for ID which I didn't have on me at that time. I was told you look 16 so I can't sell one to you if you can't confirm your age. I replied you have to be 17 to drive! But he still refused but allowed me to pay for my fuel, it wasn't until later I realised he can't sell me fuel if he didn't believe my age. Is this correct and if so should and how would I report this?

I assume this is just a talking point question, the scratchcard bit is irrelevant as you've said you had something in the car which proved your age if you really wanted it.

I realise that hc4361 but I was wondering how, from the till operators point of view how he/she was supposed to know a driver was 16 or over before fuel was put in? Obviously they are going to require payment for the fuel otherwise the till will be out and perhaps they will be required to make up the loss.
Although the penalty is a fine of up to £5000, I don't think anyone has been prosecuted for selling fuel to under 16s. It's not something the authorities check by using children as they do with cigarettes or alcohol.
Point 4 here is interesting:

Here's the ting Ellen. Most petrol stations simply dock their sdatff's wages for any problems that occur eg drive-aways, thefts from the shop, or complaints about selling under-age. So, yer man was being ultra cautious. And probably fancies the pants off you too, on account of your gorgeous youthful looks. One day you will treasure being taken for too young. It doesn't happen to me any more, hasn't for about 40 years, so rejoice.
