Work experience within my company

I am currently temping with an agency and have been working for a reputable company as an Admin for about a month. My contract will end at the end of May, which is apporching fast. Problem is, I feel the current job is too basic for me as its pure admin. I am IT graduate and have worked with a variety of databases previously. Thing is, I know I am with the right company but with the wrong job. One of the departments of the company deal with processing various data and therefore the positions there are quite technical - my speciality. There are no vacancies in that department as yet but does anyone else think its work getting in touch with that department internally and asking for some kind of work experience in that field ? I could send in my CV to the manager of that department or via personnel. As I said I am only an Admin at the moment and feel that I have alot to offer for a more technical job. I really want to stay with the company as I feel there is alot scope for the technical jobs going on there. Any ideas ? or should get in touch with the agency I work for and share my thoughts with them ?

Yup, being pro-active is the best thing and I'd go within the company, even turning up in the department for an informal chat is good. Plus as you are in the "system" for the company they can more easily ask about you than being a faceless name on a piece of paper.

Plus you are showing you're a self-starter, a factor which a lot of people overlook as being important. You seem confident too, but also realise you have something to learn, so sound employable for me. If the manager wants you he'll find a way to get you in, it's nearly alway possible if the company is a good one.

The only thing *might* be that your agency has something in their contract with your employer giving them a bonus if you get employed full time as a result of their placement.

But overall, I'd take the bull by the horns and go after it, a lot of managers appreciate it when people are coming up wanting to work for them nd being honest with them - rather than grumbling in the background that they aren't being progressed even though the staff have never said a word.
