I am fitting my kitchen at the moment and have been practicing using a router by cutting up the old worktops. I am cutting the worktop face down and the roll edging first and plunging about 8mm at a time. The router speed is set at approx 28,000 rpms. As I am practicing on the old ones the only thing that I am not happy with is a little bit of laminate is chipping off at the front of the worktop but only in one side. would using a bit of masking tape help when cutting to avoid this???? I also thought that the old worktops due to their age are also probably quite brittle. Any help would be appreciated.

Never done this (although I intended to once and even bought a template, but opted to get a professionally cut granite one instead by the time I needed the worktop). I was just wondering if using a Stanley knife to cut the worktop in the right place first, might stop any laminate chipping ?

Good idea. I have heard of recommendations to use a glass cutter to score the laminate but this was when using others tools not a router.
Get a Pro to cut it, if he drops a clanger he has to fix it, you only get one chance.

All you need is a good router bit(sharp). Don't use a Stanley!

Always cut left to right - away from the post formed edge.
You have to flip the worktop over to do the opposite cut, again, working away from the post formed edge( front curved or FACE edge).
