The word “know” can carry a wide range of meanings. For example, a person Who had never met him might say: “Yes, I know David Cameron. He is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.” On the other hand, another person who has, on numerous occasions, seen the Prime Minister might acknowledge: “No, I don’t know Mr. Cameron.”

I am reading this thread and cannot quite get my head round the fact that the OP was about knowing God, and now it seems to have gravitated towards Christmas, Santa Claus, the Watchtower Organisation and even to a little mudslinging.

Surely a person is entitled to his/her belief without having to state every time that he/she is a believer and have to battle...

@Bataxia - You argue for appeasement - live and let live. That might be viable proposition - albeit one that would lead to a dull R&S or News section - except for one thing.

Goodlife and others routinely and regularly initiate posts here to evangelise, to proselytise, to convert. Their posts display their complete faith in a literalist interpretation of the bible, their complete rejection of science, and a continuing lack of any internal consistency, logic or critical thinking.Their posts display little evidence of a desire for discussion or debate - their mind is made up, their faith blinkers them to any criticism or rebuttal.

When people push ideas on others, whilst assuming a mantle of moral superiority or authority, such ideas deserve rebuttal. And ideas and opinions are not all equal, are not all sacrosanct. Post stupidity and expect to be engaged and errors pointed out. Continually post stupidity or evangelise and expect to be flamed for it. I try to do that at insolently as possible.
Batexia, //He even forgave the Jews!//

For what? A trumped up story and a manufactured lie? Jesus WAS a Jew!
Naomi,
Jesus was born into the Nation of Isreal.
Yes, he forgave the Jews. Why? For ignoring his Father and putting him to death. Luke 23 v 34 But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing."

Ignoring reality, willfully or otherwise, does not excuse one from the inevitable consequences of ignorance, nor does making it up as you go along change the past, present or provide better insight into what lies ahead in the future.

Essential to the human potential for applying knowledge effectively is an underlying understanding of the means and process by which we obtain it and verify what we know, not least of all an understanding of the means and process of reason. Any claim of knowledge of God only confirms a complete lack of understanding of how anyone knows anything at all.
Batexia, //he forgave the Jews. Why? For ignoring his Father and putting him to death.//

The Jews didn’t put him to death – the Romans did that – but nevertheless you buy into into the lie and perpetuate the hatred and divide in timeless Christian fashion.

//But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing."//

Two things there. Firstly, if Jesus actually spoke those words – and it’s a big ‘if’ - to whom was he referring? The Romans crucified him, so we can only presume he was talking about them.

Secondly, who recorded these words? His disciplines had fled and, if memory serves, we’re told in three of the four gospels that the women watched from afar, Pretty difficult to hear the words of a dying man from afar.

As Mibs rightly says //Any claim of knowledge of God only confirms a complete lack of understanding of how anyone knows anything at all.//
The very existence of Christ is a huge "if".

The inordinate number of claims about things he is supposed to have done such as bring the dead back to life highly suggest Christ is no more real than Harry Potter.

As Naomi points out nobody was there to report what Jesus is supposed to have said. It is yet another aspect of the Jesus story that does not bear up to rational analysis.

The overwhelming evidence is that The New Testament is a work of fiction written explicitly to "fulfill" the prophecies of the Old Testament by those who sought to assume power over the gullible.
@Duncer - Us Chairboys always perform at our best when supposely outclassed :) Always one of my first choices when playing Football Manager....

LG, at the risk of being boastful (and that's a sin), I would love to compare my achievements with Queen of the South, (dearly beloved's dad's team) to yours with the Wanderers. I am a ChampMan anorak of the highest order. There, confession over.
@Duncer - Championship Manager, thats it! Not Football Manager - knew that sounded wrong.

Yep, I would say QoS probably trumps the Wanderers :) Fave game of mine for a very long time.
I haven't played it for many months, and for very good reason - days of my life disappear when I start. Mrs D also trends to get a tad annoyed.

How many times have I said, "I'll be up to bed in an hour", only to think, "One more game", in an attempt to get things right?

We share a weakness.
'' nearly 2 billion people celebrate Christmas''
No most of them celebrate a commercial festival by buying too many products and eating/drinking too much.
Very few celebrate the religious significance of the birth of Christ.
