Tell him that NYC is now the safest large city in the US, and is not even in the top 100 most dangerous cities in US.  And tell him you're immortal, so you've got nothing to worry about.

Hello, I've been to NY a number of times and have never felt scared or uncomfortable in any way. On the advice front - get them to come with you! Please don't let someone's fear stop you from seeing one of the greatest City's in the world. HAVE FUN!!

dont worry.  i dont intend of letting his opinion stop me going, but i dont want him to worry about me the whole time i'm there.
New Yorkers these days are quite annoyed by the "danger" rep. It's actually VERY safe and welcoming. Like any big city, you use common sense and a bit of street savvy to ensure safety, but don't worry -enjoy! Most places in the UK are probably far worse!
