Have a race up the steps from the harbour to the Abbey.
Buy Whitby Lucky Ducks (little glass ducks, from a shop somewhere in the town).
Its a lovely place parts of it are typical seaside town, but I just think its picturesque.

It isn't the most "thrilling" place but I never think anything lives up to its hypr.

James Cooks house (or where he lived while apprenticed is there) The abbey up on the cliffs and if your there at dusk think of Count Dracula's boat drifting up the inlet.
Oh Jenna, I love Whitby - everything about it. Such an interesting town.

Their is a fish restaurant called The Magpie in Whitby which is really famous - does absolutely fabulous fish and chips the likes of which you would get nowhere else. However, the queues stretch all round the town. It is three stories high!!

Yes, climb up the steps to the Abbey. The Abbey itself is wonderful to look around. The shopping area at the foot of the steps is really quaint with lots to look at.

Just strolling around the harbour is a real treat, watching the fishing boats come in and out.

And there is the usual seaside amusement area for a bit of tacky fun - including the Dracula experience.

There are loads of cafes, restaurants and pubs and the town always seems to be bustling whenever you go - great atmosphere.

We make a point of going to North Yorkshire every year at least once and Whitby is always on the agenda!!

The weather looks more promising for tomorrow - but wrap up warm for the East Coast.

Have Fun xxxxxx
Fish and Chips at the Magpie Cafe (you will probably have to queue)
Take home some Kippers from Fortunes Smoke House (They wrap them well so no smells)
Lots of Boat Trips
Buy some Whitby Jet (Local black mineral in various guises)
Oh yes, Whitby Jet. A must - but if you buy it make sure it is genuine from one of the more established shops. I have quite a bit of Whitby jet and silver jewellery.

Glad we agree about the queuing at the Magpie Emeritus!! It's worth it - but probably not if you are only in Whitby for a day.
The "Dracula Experience" ?

So ... people ... bite you ???
don't bother with the fortune tellers

I really can't wait :)

I love the idea of the ducks (could do with some luck haha!) and Whtiby jet. Am thinking I might lose a race with the evil arthritis and up again some hardcore walkers (think Everest base camp!), might get them to race and I can spectate and take photos :)

The Magpie is definitely on the list! One of my friends can't do gluten so wants to try the gluten free fish :) I think we were going to go for takeaway to save time (and money), are the queues as long for that? The Smokehouse too as one of the lads wants to try some kippers :)

Harbour and abbey are definitely on the list.

Ooh don't get me started on Dracula with my sexy vampire fetish haha!
They do guided walks around Whitby 'The Dracula Walk' I think they do it at night - creepy!!!!
I would defintely recommend one of the ghost walks. Great fun. Count all the steps as you climb them, it's bad luck if you get the count wrong!
"it's bad luck if you get the count wrong! "

...then don't count them. :-))
squarebear,
just spotted a spelling mistake - no, not in the last sentence......or is that one too ?
society, it's the same with the Dracula walks... bad luck if you get "The Count" wrong...
Now that would be bad luck jno!!

eugh... cut those nails, boy
I feel eminently qualified to comment on this post as I live in Whitby!
Local events this weekend (listed in todays paper) include:
Special Constable recruitment drive
A jumble sale
A cake icing workshop
Several domino drives
A darts final night

I would advise giving all of them a miss.

Sorry to have to tell you but it is going to rain.

Ahhh I'm only there for the day so guessing that rules the tours out :( Mind you, there are some friends who can't make it so likely to be another trip at some point, hopefully for the weekend.

Nooooo, it can't rain! :(

Hmmm...special constable recruitment drive...does that mean there will be men in uniform about? Who cares about the rain then!

If you see a mad woman running (well in an arthritic way) about the place tomorrow taking photos of anything and everything...more than likely in the vicinity of men in uniform...it will probably be me. Just be glad you're not on my Facebook haha, I swear I'm going to break it with my photo uploads on day!

Thank you everyone for the tips :)
On a serious note - just wander around the old town, have a walk up the 199 steps to the Abbey, buy some kippers and have lunch at the magpie
And, from Mrs O's other thread, "Just had a Domestic Dispute," there is plenty of live entertainment over at her house...........
