The DEUCE will get you from almost any hotel to anywhere along the strip:

The bus queues are usually enormous, it's almost worth having a car, there's parking at all the hotels and if it's hot and humid, the shortest distance can be unpleasant.
Downtown is fabulous though!
To answer your guestion. Downdown Las Vegas is at one end of the strip. The strip is several miles long with casinos on both sides of the road. You may have to walk the equivilent of 3 or 4 blocks just to get past one building and onto the next. Make sure you see the light show in downtown. It is free and worth watching. I think it starts at 7pm or so and happens every 30 minutes. If you are out early in the morning you can watch as they change the lights on the covered walkway that is the light show.

Thanks sitges, and all of you. Anything else for free please ?
we took the monorail to Sahara [ last stop] and then waited for bus to go Downtown about 6pm,hindsight we could have caught the bus on the Strip, we had a lady in a wheelchair with us, the bus driver strapped the wheelchair inside the bus and everbody waited patienty whilst he did this no one made any complaint about the time or the extra work, the fare was minimal a few dollars. We enjoyed our time Downtown it was like one big street party and the food and entertainment/shows is all cheaper than on the Strip.
Coming back it was late after 11.30pm and we were tired so we got a taxi but the buses were still running and not crowded as most of the crowds had gone by 10pm.
Also worth goping to the Rio and seeing their free show also dont miss Big Elvis who sings in Wild Bills Gambling Saloon every weekday aft show is free just have to buy one drink.
Treasure Island have a free show several times a day outside he casino on the strip.
The Mirage volcano blows up several times a day.
Bellagio has the dancing fountains all through the day.

In the Forum shops at Caesar's Palace, they have the Moving Statues in the afternoons.
In MGM Grand there is the Lion Enclosure ,available to visit all day.
If you 're looking to go to shows that you pay for, look out for the booths on the strip offering cut price tickets ...good value and reasonable seats.
