I am planning to pack a 12v portable rechargeable power supply into my check-in luggage. As long as I disconnect the terminals from the battery and wrap it carefully, will this be permissable?

no - nor will you be able to carry it on. Battery packs are not permitted at all, although they don't seem to mind if they're in a laptop etc

Thanks for your input Whickerman. By the time I got your reply I had already packed the unit into my check-in suitcase. If it had been picked up during the final x-ray I would probably have ditched the battery and just kept the 'shell'. Anyway, it got through. I flew with Aegean Air, Greece. Maybe it wouldn't have worked with another airline? Just goes to show ......
nice one. Sometimes it's better to say nothing!
